Scrunchies: Size Matters

You’ve got a unique head of hair - that’s not up for discussion. Whether you’ve got a whole lot, not so much, or specific concerns that you’d like to keep in mind, there’s a 4th + Fir scrunchie that will suit your needs.

How Our Sizing Works

4th + Fir offers three standard sizes: Mini, Medium and Large.

The main differences between each of these sizes are the elastic length and the amount of fabric used to create the scrunchie component

Elastic is Everything

4th + Fir has sourced a strong and reliable elastic that maintains its strength and elasticity, even through rough and constant use.

Mini scrunchies are made with a shorter elastic (4” when stretched across) which nicely accommodates thinner hair. For this reason, 4th + Fir’s Mini scrunchies are most popular for our younger customers and those with thin/fine hair. If you’re a fan of wearing braids or hair half up/half down, a Mini scrunchie can be a perfect choice since they are lower profile.

Medium and Large scrunchies are both made with the same length of elastic that stretches 6.5” across. This measurement allows for a tight wrap when tying a bun or a scrunchie. Most hair types will comfortably wrap the scrunchie 2-3 times around a ponytail and twice around a bun.

If you’re sitting at home wondering how to decide, take your go-to hair elastic and a ruler/measuring tape. Stretch the elastic between both thumbs until it can stretch no longer. Determine the measurement and consider whether you generally need more or less stretch. This can help inform your choice between Mini and Medium/Large.

The Frill of It

We’re not here to be stingy, you’ll always have enough fabric with a 4th + Fir scrunchie. In my opinion, a cardinal sin of scrunchies is when there’s not enough fabric to accommodate the full stretch of the elastic. I use what might be considered an indulgent length of fabric to ensure that there is always enough ruffle to delight and perform.

When it comes to height (measured from inside of the scrunchie to outer edge), there are a few difference:

  • Mini scrunchies measure 1” tall

  • Medium scrunchies measure 1.5” tall

  • Large scrunchies measure 3” tall

Go Big?

Franky, if you want something with some more pizzaz, you’ll want to go for a Large. Additionally, if you like to wear big, fluffy buns, Large will be helpful as the extra fabric will add to the bulk of your marvellous hair-do.

Ok but I have SUPER thin hair

My first advice is to recommend a Mini scrunchie in a lightweight fabric, preferrably satin. If you’re not quite sure, this is a situation where using the contact form is the best choice! I’m happy to work 1:1 with you to make a custom scrunchie that will suit your needs.

So… are you feeling ready to make your choice? I’ve made it super easy for you to shop the size you want:
